What's really interesting is that chocolate (dark chocolate) is better for men then for women. Last month I went to a brain seminar by Gary L. Wenk, Ph.D. (you can find his blog on Psychology Today-http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/your-brain-food/201011/chocolate-the-good-the-bad-and-the-angry) he talked about the benefits of men eating chocolate and how it helped them live longer. This effect was not seen in women who eat chocolate. Interesting that it is a "women's food."

Thanks for your comments Kourtney and LeAnne (and the Trackback "for the love of books"!) - Kourtney - it's definitely worth a read. LeAnne - which Twilight Zone episode? Someone else said that on the Adios,Barbie FB page and I didn't know there'd been something like that! I'm intrigued! (must go check it out!)

I really enjoyed reading this article. It brings up the many issues we are talking about in our Women’s Studies class, showing how much the media cultivates us women and our mindsets about how the society expects us to be. The media accomplishes this by creating an unrealistic image of beauty for women where it only leads them to lose their confidence and do everything to achieve that image. It’s really such a shame that the media is able to have such a power over us women and society. We need to learn to respect our bodies and know that no one is perfect, not even these celebrities.

When I was a little girl I was very hard on myself. Barbie did not make that any better. I recall an occasion when I asked my mother why I don't look like barbie. Her hair is so silky and long, she has long thin legs and an "incredibly" thin body. I wanted to look just like that, I would think that that is the way a woman should look. I did not learn anything from just sitting in my room and playing with barbie. If anything, my insecurities grew stronger. Barbie has this "perfect" life and her appearance is flawless. Now that I am older I think that barbie is a horrible example for women out there. In addition, I don't see why girls are obligated to play with barbie when they are kids and do "girl" things such as brushing her hair, do her makeup etc. It just tells us how girls are exposed to gender socializing in their early years already. They think that what is expected from them is to be pretty, do makeup and have very long and nice hair. It is so sad that girls are exposed to that in such an early age. No wonder many girls are so insecure. While boys play with cars, action figures, creative stuff girls are told to play with barbie. Why do boys get to be creative and play with more creative toys whereas girls get to just play with barbie and her makeup. That tells us how sick our world is and how women are not supposed to do anything else but worry about what they look like and constantly diet to look "perfect". I wish they could just make barbie a little curvier; put some weight on her and make her look like the rest of the women out there.

this sounds just like an episode of the twilight zone where everyone is considered ugly and when they reach a certain age they have to chose between a limited amount of pre-set bodies and faces to have plastic surgery to look like...just saying...

I can definite relate to that. When I was younger, I would always hide from people so that nobody would see me eat. In this messed up world of ours, it is utterly embarrassing for a woman to eat in public, but a man is always supposed to eat a lot. I recall when I was younger, my mother letting my brother eat as much as he wanted and she would tell me to stop because she said it is not womanly to eat a lot. She said that a woman should eat a little bit to stay small. In addition, when I asked her why my brother is allowed to eat whatever he wants she would responds: "Because he is a man, and he needs to be strong". So all of sudden, it has to do with weakness and strength. It is very sad how it has become a trend to eat like a bird. Girls are ashamed to eat because they are expected to be slender and fit as opposed to men who are supposed to strong and muscular. In addition to that, it also goes back to men being dominant and women submissive, it goes together with how women are expected to be small and men are expected to be strong and muscular.

I agree that the BMI is just not that accurate. I was very overweight and so far have lost approx. 65 pounds, and do need to lose more. My issue with the BMI is that it does not take into account a person's body frame and whether they are big boned, fine boned, or average. I am a large framed woman with big bones. When I lie down, my ribs stick out, yet I am still in the catagory of "obese" according to the BMI!
