Bethenny Frankel Would Rather be Airbrushed Than Wear Fur

Bethenny Frankel of the Housewives of New York City

In addition to being pregnant and starring in Real Housewives of New York City, Bethenny Frankel stars nude for a PETA billboard unveiled December 15th in Manhattan’s Times Square. The billboard is one of a series of nude celebrities who bare all as part of PETA’s “I’d rather go naked than wear fur” ad campaign. In response to criticism that the PETA billboard has been heavily airbrushed, Frankel provided US magazine with the original photo as proof to the contrary. In the US magazine article about the billboard she says,

“Everything I’m about is being honest and being upfront,” Frankel, 39, tells UsMagazine.com. “So if people are talking and saying [the photo] was airbrushed…then, you know what? Here’s the picture. Have it your way.”

Unfortunately her photo doesn’t bolster her case and in fact serves as strong evidence that she is in need of an eye exam and some prescription eye-glasses. Has celebrity and its consumers become so immune to airbrushing that we can’t even distinguish fact from fiction anymore? Either way, you be the judge. Which one of these does not like the other?

  1. Annabel, Great point! I totally agree she’s confident. While she does seem confident, her diet book, boob job, etc. reinforces appearance over character and accomplishment. But hey, she is a Real Housewife on a scripted reality show. Taking that into consideration, she does represent real confidence and doesn’t hide behind false confidence as some other wives do on all versions of the show.

  2. Either way, at the end of the day, she’s still doing it for a noble cause, no? I think it’s more about an animal’s dead body image rather than a female’s body image (in this case). It seems whether she was airbrushed or not, she’d still be attacked (a lose-lose situation), which I think also lends itself to the notion of inequity, media bias, self-esteem, etc. (topics on your site).

  3. Eh. It’s not shocking she can’t see the difference — it’s not so much she’s become “immune” as much as she’s just unceasingly confident in her appearance. i’ll take confidence (even if misguided) over self-sabotaging thoughts any day.
